I Challenge You

After everything I have endured, and after all the changes I have made not only to my body, but to my mind as well, I found that the one drastic change I made was not in how I treat myself, but in how I treat others.

It’s been a common thread through out this website on where I stand on judging people and casting bias opinions. But, if I am honest with you, I used to be that guy. I used to be the guy to sneer at another person who I didn’t agree with, or cast an evil glance. Why? Well now the answer comes easily to me, I was jealous. It’s as simple and as complicated as that.

While being stripped down during the recovery process, I was also stripped of any and all things that could make make me insecure. And after all, isn’t that the true emotion behind jealousy? I believe that at the heart of jealous behavior lies insecurity.

While on drugs I hated everyone, but most of all I hated myself. So if there was any way to make myself feel better about my situation, it would mean I had to put others down.

Well, today, today is a different story. Today and everyday I wake up wanting to better myself, and to better the lives of others. Each moment I am aware that the littlest thing I do, like smiling at a stranger, could completely change someones day. Hell, it could change there life.

I was lucky enough to have people who did this for me. It’s my time to pay it forward.

So today I challenge you. Listed below is a list of ten acts I challenge you to accomplish this week. All the while remembering that bettering someones outlook on life with a simple act of kindness isn’t only healing for them, but for you as well. So, go on, give it a try.

Top Ten Acts of Kindness

1.) Smile. It’s really just that easy. Smile at your friends, smile at your family, or a complete stranger.

2.) Be kind to someone doing a service for you. Even though you are the costumer and are paying them, it doesn’t excuse the fact that you have to be nice. So go on and say thank you a little too much to your waitress, and stop huffing and puffing on the check-out line. Remember…tomorrow’s never promised.

3.) Why not pay someone a compliment? Tell your mom she looks great. Tell the lady in the Dunkin Donuts drive-thru window that she has beautiful eyes and that you hope she has a  wonderful day. Everyone loves a compliment every now and again.

4.) Hold the door for someone at least once this week. We’re always in such a rush these days that basic human decency often gets left behind. Lets work on that one.

5.) Let that person with one item go in front of you and your full shopping cart. You probably just made their whole day.

6.) Tell someone close to you how much you really appreciate them. You never know when you’ll get that chance again.

7.) Do someone a favor without being asked. It’s always nice to not have to ask for help and to have it given to you anyway.

8.) Leave a note for a family member, friend, or co-worker somewhere you know they’ll  find it. It’s not something we do anymore now that computers have taken over our lives.

9.) Do something you have no desire in doing, just because you know it’ll make someone else ecstatic.

10. When someones talking…just listen. Sounds like common sense, I know, but instead of interrupting with your opinion, sit back and take the conversation in. Everyone is always waiting for their turn to speak about themselves. But, lending an ear could be the most important thing you ever do. Who knows, you could very well save their life.

So, do we have a deal? I challenge you to complete this list during the week. Leave me a comment below and share with all of us, how you brightened someones day.
